HOW I SEE IT | Transition to Transformation

August 2024

Dear Friends,

As summer quietly yields to fall, I find myself reflecting on the subtle yet profound signs of transition around us. Living in Houston, we don’t get the grand show of changing leaves or crisp air that marks the season in other parts of the world. But make no mistake—transition is happening, nonetheless. It’s in the slightly cooler mornings, the way the light shifts in the afternoons, and the gentle hum of routines picking back up.

In our own lives and communities, these transitions are even more pronounced. Clients are returning from their summer getaways, reestablishing the rhythms of daily life. Some are in the throes of getting their kids back to school, adjusting to the new pace. Others are experiencing transitions of a different kind—marriages, new babies, or even retirement. These moments of change ripple through our lives, often quietly but with a deep impact.

With all this transition comes the need for our surroundings to evolve as well. Transition, after all, is the internal work—the process—that leads to outer transformation. While we often celebrate the final outcome, the real magic happens in those small, daily shifts. It’s in the thousand little changes that gradually amount to something entirely new.

In the world of residential design, this concept of transformation is our bread and butter. We start with a vision, often born from the desire to live in a way that isn’t fully realized yet. This month, we’re excited to feature a Q&A with building designer Bat Ogerro, who shares his insights on how architects and designers are the first professionals on a project to bring that vision into focus. We help clients refine what they’re looking for and needing from their new lives and the spaces that will support them. It’s an exploration of how the process of design becomes a collaborative journey of discovery and creation.

Our work, then, is to nurture that vision, to hold it steady, and to take those countless small steps towards it. The final product—the glamorous reveal—is the part we all applaud. But the journey to get there? That’s where the true magic lies.  In the smallest details, meticulous follow up, and the most mundane of documentation.

It’s a messy, gritty magic. The kind that doesn’t always feel magical in the moment. But after 16 years in this industry, I’ve learned to trust in this process. Because I know that at the end, there’s a moment of completion that is nothing short of transformative. It’s a moment that opens a new chapter, not just in the life of a home, but in the lives of the people who dwell within it.

As we reflect on the beauty of transitions, we send our heartfelt congratulations to our clients who completed their projects this summer. From kitchen renovations to a full-scale 18-month new build, we applaud your final outcomes and are deeply grateful for the opportunity to walk you through the process of transformation.

So, as we all navigate our own transitions this season, let’s take a moment to appreciate the process. It may be slow at times, it may be messy, but it’s leading us somewhere beautiful.

Warmly,
